4:30 PM CASE STUDY: Designing and Constructing a Secure Mental Health Facility to Support a Therapeutic Approach

Dhulwa is a purpose built mental health unit providing specialised care in a secure inpatient environment. The facility will provide individually tailored programs to improve the chances of recovery for each consumer and treatment is based on a therapeutic and rehabilitation approach, rather than a correctional methodology. While Dhulwa is located off-campus, the facility has been designed to complement the existing services provided at the Canberra Hospital which include the Mental Health Assessment Unit and the Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit. In this session, Ben will outline:

  • The design phases – Site selection, concept development, prototype acceptance process
  • Construction stages – Demolition, early works, main works, post completion works
  • Stakeholder engagement – User Group coordination, working groups and community engagement
  • Project insights – Lessons learnt, closeout workshops and post implementation review outcomes
