Cheryl Carr

Deputy Project Director – Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment
Department of Health and Human Services Tasmania

12:50 PM CASE STUDY: Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment: Getting to the Start Line on a Brownfields Site

The $689 Million RHH Redevelopment is Tasmania’s largest health infrastructure project. It is delivering a 10-storey inpatient facility in the middle of an operational hospital in Hobart’s central business district. Preconditions of construction included $50 million in refurbishment works, the relocation of 125 inpatient beds, the management of more than anticipated latent conditions and other exceptional circumstances. After years of stops and starts including an independent review commissioned by Ministerial Statement, the project is now under construction. In this session, Cheryl will discuss:

  • Old buildings, new wards and the impact of rain on prefabricated modules for an inpatient facility
  • Balancing a budget and stakeholder design requests
  • The highs and lows of delivering a public value hospital project
