In recent years advances have been made in the world of vacuum pumps and medical suction. 
The two main advances in the manufacture of vacuum pumps are the emergence of oil free pumps using composite vanes and the development of the motor speed control (VFD).

The speed control delivers only the flow which is required for each independent pump. As flow demand varies so does the pump speed. All of the pumps can be running as low as 20Hz increasing in speed with demand. The slower running pumps lower power costs and further enhance vane life by up to 40%.  The power is also dramatically reduced as there is no stopping and starting current (normal with high/low level control) and no large receiver needed to cushion vacuum level when pumps are stopped.  This gives the hospital total control ensuring that all pumps are operational.
Apart from an initial capital cost saving the savings over five years in reduced or eliminated service costs can be as high as $8,000.00 add to this a saving in energy, on average, $1,800.00 over five years. This is a significant energy saving and a major reduction in carbon footprint.
